A persistent challenge across industrial value chains is the absence of a seamlessly connected and interoperable digital backbone capable of ensuring end-to-end data continuity from product design through manufacturing, operation, and end-of-life management. Although organisations generate and utilise extensive datasets across disciplines - including product development, multidisciplinary modelling and simulation, material properties and characterisation, as well as manufacturing and quality assurance - these data sources remain fragmented, technologically heterogeneous, and often inaccessible to downstream stakeholders.
This lack of integration results in a disconnected information landscape in which no single, authoritative source of product and material information exists. As a consequence, critical knowledge is siloed within proprietary tools or isolated processes, limiting the ability to trace data across the lifecycle, hindering design-for-manufacturing and design-for-sustainability practices, and constraining the effective reuse of data for operational optimisation or circularity strategies. The absence of a unified digital infrastructure thus acts as an structural barrier, preventing organisations from realising the full potential of data-driven innovation, lifecycle transparency, and cross-domain collaboration. Organizations need to connect and trace data seamlessly from product design to manufacturing, operation, and maintenance.
Digital Thread represents an integrated and interoperable digital backbone capable of aggregating and orchestrating data from product development and multidisciplinary modelling tools, materials properties and materials characterisation, together with manufacturing and product quality assurance. Digital Thread linking material, engineering and manufacturing dataflows of a product for a more precise and efficient design and manufacturing. This digital pipeline is based on AutomationML/JSON, modelled under Process-Product-Resources scheme, acting as orchestrator to register and link all the data along the material value chain.
