Scope:

Significant uncertainty regarding the material properties and structural response of WAAM steels, combined with absence of standardised methods for the testing and determination of mechanical properties of WAAM material for structural applications are notable challenges for the industry.

Approach:

Key material characterisation parameters for WAAM steels can be established through a comprehensive experimental programme, featuring geometric characterisation, tensile coupon tests, microstructural analysis and structural/mechanical testing of WAAM components and hybrid WAAM–conventional steel parts.

Outcome:

The provision of validated, reproducible methodologies and datasets enabling a reliable understanding of the mechanical behaviour of WAAM steel components. These results directly support the derivation of design resistances, partial safety factors, and numerical modelling strategies suitable for structural design.
