The WAAM Open Research Lab (ORL) is managed by the Smart Systems and Smart Manufacturing department together with the Laser and Systems Applications one that develop applied technological research in the field of Digital thread & twin, factory automation, RT sensing & control, additive manufacturing, laser technologies, advanced materials and welding and joining among others,
The WAAM ORL provides open access to facilities and equipment to develop and validate sustainable process and technologies, as AM, to different sectors. It is an Automated, sensed and fully digitalised infrastructure capable of complex monitoring and control strategies deployment. The facility materialises the long-term effort of both hardware and data interoperability (modular and reconfigurable Plug-and-Produce systems), avoiding the dependence on proprietary solutions and enabling data elaboration and exploitation strategies based on AI as a leveraging factor for a flexible and efficient manufacturing, giving cognitive and physical support to the operator.
The PIONEER WAAM ORL is part of the open & digitized AM pilot facilities belonging to AIMEN, enabling the easier realisation of testing and experimentation activities for the manufacturing sector (new processes, materials, quality assessment, etc.) as well as development and implementation of novel technologies linked to the AM domain (monitoring solutions, control systems, data-based approaches, etc.).
